The last few weeks.....

Well Happy Brithday Jenn  2 Weeks agao I finally hit the ripe ol' age of 29!

A lovely startto my day with a Circuit class with my good friend Kath. The whole class sang Happy Bday to me - led by our instructor and friend Kris. At school there were well-wishers everywhere. My favourite present was a rock from one of my boys! (It was a big rock) lol Dinner with my Fam at my fav restuarant Toscani's was very sad - we had gone for Gluten Free Pizza - none available that nite.... So we charged on and enjoyed some gluten-free pasta dish, followed by iceream at Baskin and Robbins!

My most interesting present of the day was getting one of the toughest behaviour kids put into my class - she will forever be remebered as my bday pressie! Also found out that I was officially staying at my school til the end of the year - Much to my disgust - they won't let me go out bush! But all good - Im very lucky to be at such a good school as it is, and I get time with my fam, and friends!

Also have made some friends at school - got a drinking buddy now - who is a hoot! We went to the races last Sat - mate - I LOVE the races now :-) Meat market galore! Forgot what a Cutie I am!!!

So enjoying my day off - rest for me!!!!

The Latest in MY world

Ive been home for a wonderful 2 months now - and although missing my Korean friends VERY much - I am loving the sunshine and activity that goes on here.

School:
I have been at my new school - Strathpine West State School for 4 and 1/2 weeks. I have a beautiful Grade 4 class - which chanllenges me to no end - as I don't know the curriculum as well as the lower school. It is only a 5 minute drive (if I hit every green light), which is wonderful! Mum just informed me that she saw the Principal of my school and heard wonderful reports on me. snap snap  I think I will stick around til the end of the year at this school.

Family and Friends:
Its been so nice spending time with family and friends again - however Skye being an hour drive away is hard - I miss you Girl! Its been wonderful catching up with friends and meeting new friends through work and the gym.

My Car:
I have attached piccies of my new car Apple - I washed her yesterday - prob the first and last time this will happen.  She is beautiful and gets me from A to B quite nicely.

Shave for a Cure:
Last Thursday night, friends of mine - Tracee and Jane, held a Shave for a Cure (raising money for cancer research). I was asked to be the person who does the talking into the microphone - introducing people getting shaved or coloured hair. They did a superb job with organisation - and although I was EXTREMELY nervous - I gave it my best shot and had fun in the process! Although unsure of the final figure - they had a whole tonne of people there!!!!!

So at the moment that's me - very happy and enjoying the challlenges of life. No FEAR!

Aussie Aussie Aussie

Home Sweet Home - What a WONDERFUL feeling!

Leaving Daejeon: Stephan (our hard worker and handsome young friend) took Val and I to the Bus stop in the SUper Bongo (his van). He helped with the luggage - which was a HUGE effort! Stephan taught me a fun Korean dancing game before I got onto the bus which was so sweet!

Bus trip: Our own personal limo! Val and I were the ONLY people on the bus for the 3 hour drive! It was a good thing we had pre-bought our tickets the day before lol.

At the airport: Tears for my baggage! My big bag weighed a hefty 47 kgs! 20kg max for each bag! So I was slapped with a $350 excess baggage fee - but I turned the water works on - and suddenly the Kind and loving Korean lady dropped the price to $230! She charged me the price of only 10kgs over! I justified it well - I mean I HAD been living in S.Korea for a full year!

The Plane flights:
Seoul to Tokyo - I flew Asiana Airlines (Which I highly recommend!) The flight was half full so I was able to move to an aisle all by myself for the 2 hour trip! This was the last time I heard the Korean language being spoken!

Tokyo to Brisbane - After the 2 hour layover in Tokyo, I boarded the Japan Airlines flight to home. It was a 9:45pm night flight and I was upstairs on the upper deck of the plane - so cool! The 2 seats beside me were empty - so I crossed all my fingers and toes and prayed that no one would sit beside me! So the 8 and half hour trip was wonderful! After  a light meal and 2 bottles of white wine later I was able to cat-nap through the night (laying across the 3 seats!!!!). Flying into Brisbane airport was glorious - it was 6:30am in the morning, the sky was blue and the water was sparkling! I was SO happy to be home!!!!!

I had Landed!: I walked off the plane - straight to immigration - completely forgetting that there was no DUTY free on the other side. Handed over my passport and realised the bottle of Vodka I was looking to enjoy was still back in Duty free - next trip eh?
I had never been so happy to hear the Aussie Accent! I heard 'G'Day Mate' , 'Yeah, good on ya', and other 'normal' phrases flying all around me!
Coming through the doors with my huge amount of luggage, I saw Mum and Jacqui straight away! We hugged and cried - so good to be home! My request - straight home please!

The Last Few Days:
I have walked and walked and walked! After being in S.Korea for the whole year, I have managed to put a tidy 15kgs on! I am now in the process of walking that all off! Low Fat foods are everywhere - much more accessible than in Korea. I can also read the packets and find out if sugar is included! English is everywhere wooohoooo

Our family dog hasn't had a lot of exercise, so Lilly and I get out in the mornings together - I'm trying to get her past the 30min collapsing point! She is a bit of a wuss! I'm loving our pool - so nice to be in the warmth again!

Coming Up:
My plans involve rest and relaxation for the next month. Then maybe the following 2 months I may buy a new car and do some supply work, before commencing a full time position in June.

Keep in touch Friends!

The Aussies Tackle the SNOW

Well, A white Christmas here we come!!!!!

So much fun in the snow today - I LOVE it! Valerie, Jennfer and Korine, taught me how to: dust the snow off my gloves, walk so as to not fall over, and how to use a snow brush to clean the snow off one's car (not that I have one anymore to worry about now!!!!!).

Today we went to watch Jennifer do her Taekwondo Testing for her 2nd Degree Blackbelt - which is  HUGE thing!!! We cheered and are so proud of her!!!! Go Girl

The snow had stopped this morning before I had awoken. However, this arvo - after a 2 hour nap - I woke to find it snowing again!!!!!! So Skye and I ventured out to play in the snow. SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are a little worried about how to get to school - STEPHAN, PLEASE SEND A BUS! lol

Let me introduce you to Yoda/Sally

Today, a smallish dog (worth a LOT of money) was brought to school by one of the Korean Staff. Young Sally/Yoda - as we affectionately named her, followed Dean home yesterday. She spent the day in the FTO (Foreign Teacher's Office) with her new Best Friend - Stephan.

I was able to snag her as my 'part-time' dog for at least tonight!!!! Tomorrow - she will go to school with me - to play once again with her Uncle Stephan.

Aunty Valerie and I went to the local $1 store and purchased a leash and some gormet doggy food.
Aunty Victria and I dragged her up the 3 flights of stairs to my apartment.

What is the first thing the dog does when she comes into my house? Pees all over the lino. Although we had encouraged her many times to use the bathroom facilities outside , on our walk home.

Dogs in Korea are pampered pooches. Yoda/Sally is probably used to being carried!!!!!

I HAVE A DOG for a day (I hope we find her owners soon lol).

New members of the Family

A BIG welcome to the family - Samson, Delilah and Solomon......

My 3 new fish...

I only went to buy 2 goldfish - but as Koreans are such friendly people - I got a BONUS fish ....... So the fish needed to have their home upgraded.

Tonight, they moved from the small round fish bowl - to the big rectangular prism tank!!!!! I do believe they were almost smiling (look closely at the piccies!!!)

A HUGE thanks to their Aunty Skye, who once again, provided them with weed, a clean tank and friendship (apart from the accident with poor Solomon  who is still alive and kicking).

Just in case you were wondering!!!!
Solomon is the black fish.
Delilah is the gold fish - white tail.
Samson is the gold and black speckled fish.....

R.I.P

Well I'm sad to say, I have had a death in the family.
Could everybody please, bow your heads and recognise a minutes silence for Hope and Faith - My dearly beloved tropical fish.

Hope and Faith were loving fish - always there to remind me of the need to clean, feed and nurture them.....

They were there through many sorrowful days (although due to a dirty bowl - they actually had difficulty seeing me).

They loved their Aunty Skye and Aunty Valerie - who would insist on feeding them and cleaning their tank.

RIP little fishies - The toilet bowl will lead on many adventures...
But Beware - You may now have an Australian Accent.

Look out! iTS THE Skye and Jenn SHow

WOOHOO SKye has arrived in South Korea.

After a long and enjoyable flight (with Singapore Airlines) Skye arrived at Incheon Airport at 7am last Sunday!!! I was so excited to see her.

We had an hour to kill before the bus took us on the 3 hour drive back to Daejeon - So I introduced Skye to the some of the local food - Biminbap (rice, vegies and hot red sauce) a little bit too hot for her initially. She gave the Kimchi (fermented cabbage) a good go though - but it was SPICEY! (even for me!)

Our bus trip home was filled with catch-up conversation - although we have practically spoken every day I have been here!!!! Skye kept gazing out the window - enthralled by the sights of South Korea. I was so excited to be able to tell her neat little quirks I've discovered here so far.....

She came home and LOVED her quaint little apartment, with its full-blasting aircon! She met the Girls - our wonderful team of teachers we work with - they were all excited to see her! Val did a wonderful job cleaning and organising her place for her.

We have taken her on a few adventures.

COSTCO - with everything BIG;

The Undercover Markets - where she bought 2 pairs of shoes (so cheap). Skye had to leave a lot of stuff at home as she had plenty of pressies and essentials for me!!!!!

We are onto our 3rd day of Summer Camp (what a breeze!). Skye is fitting in here beautifully and I am so proud of her. It's wonderful to have her here.

Watch out world! Skye has arrived!!!!

My Fight with the Fish

Today I spent 2 hours wandering the streets of Daejeon.....It was a TERRIBLE day for humity (94%)... so I just got out there - knowing that sweating alot was inevitable!

I meandered through the undercover markets - that snake a couple of blocks (like tunnels) - full of the necessities to make traditional Korean Foods. Yummo!!!

Imagine this - tiny little stalls filled with greens, garlic etc and manned by little old korean ladies.....all looking at me like I am supporting their family if I buy something!!!! So I bought something little from lots of different stalls. One little old lady was so ecstatic that I stopped, that she yelled 'Thankyou' (in English) and started clapping her hands - so her friends at the next stalls could see.

This was my shopping outcome:
  • bag of lettue leaves - 1000won
  • bag of shallots - 500won
  • 2 lemons - 1000won
  • 3 bags of seaweed - 2000won
  • huge chunk of tofu - 1000won (plus bonus hot peppers)
  • mushrooms - 1000won
  • 25 eggs - 4000won
  • handful of walnuts - 2000won
  • 1 fish - 1000won

Now the final purchase - THE FISH - was the scariest!

I have been craving fish badly for the last week - so I thought bugger it - why not?

The man pointed to the fish, we agreed on the price, and then he started chopping off the head and the tail - and then removed all the guts! Hmmmm interesting.

So I wandered home with all my purchases - with sweat still pouring out of every pore! Yuck

Cooking of the fish:

Turns out there were plenty of bones left in it........so I pulled everyone of those suckers out ...... and also ripped the poor fish to shreds! (I gotta figure out how to do this!!!!)

Finally I heated some olive oil and basically fried the fish. I also cooked up the vege I had bought today.....and had some of my own side dishes - carrots, seaweed and something else which i dont know the name of)

That was my adventure today!!!!!

Enjoy the piccies

A tough day at the spa! - Naked :-)

At the Spa:

We love the Best Western Legend Hotel - for 44,000 won (bout $50aus) - we get a massage AND use of the Hot Springs facility.

Now this is the 2nd time I have done this...and I recommend it to anyone!

Getting Naked....
Let's just say - sure was easier the 2nd time round - first time I had my big Australian beach towel wrapped around me (the little Korean lady came running after me - and whipped the towel of me - apparently the rule is EVERYBODY NAKED!  )
Today I walked in freely - this place has helped me with self-confidence big-time!!!!!! Best part is - I realised how normal I am (apart from being the ONLY blonde there!!!!)

The Table....and the massage!
To start with I had to climb buck naked onto this soaped down table, while my masseuse (who's uniform consisted of black lacey panties and bra) started to scrub every inch (and I mean EVERY inch of my body). No qualms here.....'Just do it!' I thought.

After about 20mins of scrubbing (hey I got a long body), the massage started. Today she was very gentle as I had communicated to her about my previous leg injury. I look over - to the table next to me - and there is Val being walked on by her masseuse!!! I was quite gobsmacked......

But with the heated towels, cucumber on the face (freshly grated I might add!!!) I was in Heaven!!!

In the Spa.....
The Hot Springs are amazing....we changed between the hot and cold baths (and sometimes sauna) and drank LOTS of water!!!!
Everybody was out today - grandmothers, mothers, teenagers and children (thank goodness I didnt teach any of them!!!!) The thing I love is that although, people look, they just smile and keep on doing whatever!!!!!.......and if they can speak English - they will try.

After the spa.....
Turns out today must be a NationalHoliday - so we went to the shopping centre and NOTHING!!!!! - Instead we had lunch (of something we didnt order but was good!!!) and went to the movies and saw 'Robots' - FYI Kiddies flick - cartoon ....Very cute!

Skye's Aircon....
Today the engineer turned up to install 3 aircons for Val,Vicky and Skye............Its all happening in this apartment block! Goodnews is - it's all done!!!!!  3 Very happy people ...... (especially Skye who will be arriving in 2 weeks just out of Australian winter).............

Now settling down with a wonderful glass of Red Wine - full of lots of lovely anti-oxidants (and stuff)....... Thnx Val!!!
